JOEY LEVINE

THE THIRD RAIL : Kris Resnick, Joey Levine & Artie Resnick

Joey Levine sang on many of Kasentez and Katz's recordings including Captain Groovy and His Bubblegum Army's rockin' theme song and The Rock & Roll Dubble Bubble Trading Card Co. of Philadelphia 19141's anthemic "Bubblegum Music". He was also a member of The Third Rail with Kris & Arthur Resnick. However, he is best known for his lead vocals on the OHIO EXPRESS smash single "Yummy Yummy Yummy".

Actually, his vocals on "Yummy Yummy Yummy" were originally a "scratch" demo track, meant to be recorded over by another singer. Producers Kasenetz and Katz decided they liked the way Joey sang the song and released the recording with Joey's "demo" vocals unchanged. Joey appeared on the many subsequent Ohio Express hits, as did other lead vocalists. When the Express played live, they used a different vocalist because Levine preferred songwriting and studio work to touring.

After the Express, Levine scored another hit with Reunion, and the song "Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)", an amazing blur of rapid-fire nasal name-checking. Levine later kept himself busy writing, singing, and producing for acts like Jim Carroll, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, and David Sanborn. Today he uses his talent for writing stuff that sticks in your head for TV commercial jingles. Of course, Levine wasn't the only Ohio Express vocalist to continue in the music business. The lead vocalist on the very last Ohio Express hit , 1969's "Sausalito (Is the Place to Go)" was none other than Graham Gouldman, who would later found 10CC.
